Constantine Barbor MD, FRCPI

Constantine Barbor was born in Dublin in the year 1714. Barbor entered Trinity College Dublin in 1729 and graduated BA in 1734. He studied Medicine at Leiden in the Netherlands. He earned his MB in 1741 and his MD in 1742 from the College of Physicians, becoming a Fellow in the year 1747. He went on to serve as President of the College of Physicians three times, in the years 1754, 1764 and 1769. He was made an Honorary Fellow in 1782. Throughout his long career, he held a number of positions such as Physician at the Blue Coat Hospital and Governor of Dr Steeven’s Hospital.

In 1749, he was elected the first Kings Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy, holding the position until 1782. His professorship was funded by Sir Patrick Dun’s Bequest, a large estate and financial endowment left by Sir Patrick Dun (1642–1713), an Irish physician, to support medical education in Ireland. He taught in Latin.

He died on the 13th of March 1783 at the age of 71.
