Flax Seed

Latin name: linum usitatissimum

Common name: flax seed

Cultural significance/history: cultivated extensively in Ancient Egypt, mummies were wrapped in Linen (made of flax seed). Ancient priests used to wear linen as it symbolises purity, rebirth and perseverance

Active ingredients: linolenic acid and lignans 

Where it is found naturally: the Eastern Mediterranean to India

Uses/Indications: Flax seed was mostly used as a laxative. Not only is it very high in fibre, it also contains mucilage, which expands when it comes in contact with water. Flaxseed oil was believed to fight fatigue and have anti-aging properties, it was used as an antiinflammatory, and for the treatment of freckles and nail disorders. 

Mechanism of action: Linolenic acid is an Omega 3 Fatty Acid, and is a precursor for many longer Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Linolenic acid reduces pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, enhances membrane fluidity and can activate PPARs - which regulates gene expression. Lignans scavenge free radicals, have antioxidant properties and antiproliferative and anticancer effects.

Side effects: diarrhoea, bloating, cramps and gas.
